In the 1920s, an experimental pine tree forest was planted on the side of Haleakala to see if the "alien" tree would grow, flourish, etc. We went for a hike with the dogs today (we are puppy-sitting Buster while our landlords are away) and got a good workout. The forest hike feels like New England -- except all the trees are in an exact grid (see video). We headed down this crazy path (pictures don't do it justice) to a neat dried up creek with a giant wall of ... I don't even know how to describe it. It looked like a scene out of The Lord of the Rings though. Maybe the videos will help describe.
