We drove out to the west side the looooong way -- up north of the central valley around the northern tip of the west Maui mountains. It isn't in guidebooks the way the road to Hana is but it is every bit as breathtaking. The road is crazy twisty with fewer guardrails than the road to Hana -- there isn't as much to do though -- there aren't rainforest-eque hikes or waterfalls this way -- everything is much drier. The walls by the road are all this super dry clay. We stopped for some fabulous banana bread along they way (bananas are new to me) and put about a hundred miles on the car.

Great shots! Thanks for sharing. People don't travel that way as much as the road to Hana. I think if people did, it would get congested and become dangerous. Can you imagine having to back up for 1/2 a mile along the one lane cliff road if someone was coming the other way? Scary.
Thanks again!
